The salmon action is HEREfor the past several days. The fish continue to slowly work south and have been be off Bodega Head Since; Tuesay July 7-8 Rick on the New Sea Angler reported limits of fish for 19 anglers trolling off Carmet. Rick said they were both hot and lucky landing a high percentage of the 25 to 30 fish hooked. Many boats did not fare as well while a few private boaters had up to 3 limits before 9:AM. Rick said his average fish was 15 to 17 pounds and they had several in the mid to high 20s with the jackpot going 30 pounds. The weather was great with morning fog, less than 7 knots of breeze and a 6 foot swell. Looking ahead to the weekend (if the weather holds) readers can expect loooooooong lines at the launch ramps so plan accordingly.

We are seeing the salmon bite steadily improve every day since
Friday and if the weather continues to hold should only get better through July. On Monday 7-7 Rick on the New Sea Angler started the day off trolling south of the river in 100 to 120 feet of water. His 18 anglers hooked 20+ salmon landing 14 to 27 pounds. Rick said private boats and six packs saw scores of a fish per rod to limits. In the afternoon Rick switched over to rockfish landing full limits adding 15 lings to 18 pounds. The weather was great along the beach with 5 to 10 knots of breeze over a 6 foot swell.

On Sunday July 6th we saw more great rockfishing and an uptick in the salmon counts. Hunt Conrad, who writes the Healdsburg fishing report reported a solo limit fishing off the Russian river. Trolling out in 150 feet he landed a pair of fish going 20 and 22 pounds releasing a few in the 6 to 10 pound class. Hunt said that when he left around noon six pack captains Vince on the Miss Anita and Bob on the Relentless both had 8. Another private boater "Bodega Cowboy" reported limits in less than an hour of BIG fish trolling in 75-85 feet south of the river. Cowboy said that every boat around him was also hooking.
Rick on the New Sea Angler had a group of 34 anglers on board. He started his day fishing for rockfish and lings off Ft Ross for limits of mixed rockfish adding 62 lings to 23 pounds. Rick said the quality of the lings was incredible with the average running 10 to 12 pounds with lots in the teens and a few in the 20 pound class. Switching over to salmon they hooked 10 and boated 5 to 18 pounds. They were trolling off the river in 120 to 150 feet of water.  There is lots of feed throughout the area and conditions look great for the bite to break open.

On Saturday 7-5 we received several reports of great rockfish action but little in the way of any salmon scores. Rick on the New Sea Angler had another outstanding day. His 39 anglers landed limits of rockfish a mix of blacks, coppers, browns and a fee vermilions adding 64 lings to 17 pounds. Rick was fishing off Ft Ross and said he only heard of a few scattered salmon caught by private boaters.
Dan K. from Petaluma reports they had just got the trolling gear in the water after filling out rockfish limits when the Coast Guard came over the radio to warn "any private boaters who launched out of Westside and were still parked there after 2:PM WILL BE TOWED". Apparently Sonoma Parks neglected to put out any signs ahead of time informing anglers that the parking area would be closed due to the night's fireworks show. This set off an exodus from the fishing grounds back to the ramp. How incompetent does one have to be to not post signs the day or evening before?

California should see strong 2014 offshore salmon fishing seasons this year, despite the drought, and regulators will meet in Sacramento next week to begin planning the commercial and recreational catch rules. Biologists estimate that more than 600,000 Sacramento River fall-run chinook salmon are in the Pacific Ocean this year. Read more here: Sacramento Bee
